Web3 Gaming is Gaining Interest Among Esports Players

According to pro gamers Erik Engel and Max Ng, blockchain gaming has the potential to make games more rewarding for players who have invested time and effort in the game itself.

Esports players are increasingly open to blockchain gaming

In a recent interview with Cointelegraph, elite Dota 2 and Rocket League gamers Erik Engel and Max Ng expressed interest in exploring Web3 gaming.

While traditional players have long despised the concept of NFTs coming into games, those who compete in gaming tournaments for a living may not feel the same. Engel, a professional Dota 2 player from Gaimin Gladiators who has won over $400k in several major Dota 2 gaming events, said it’s refreshing to see companies make “more out of games than just games.”

He said while the idea of blockchain gaming is still a “new and expanding topic,” it’s something that he wants “to explore” down the road. He explained: “If it’ll improve gaming and make it even more rewarding, then that’s definitely something to look out for in times ahead.” The elite gamer also believes Web3 has features that “genuinely feel beneficial to the player” and expressed excitement in seeing what developers may come up with in the future.

Rocket League pro gamer Max Ng, known by his gamer tag “Maxeew,” also shared the same sentiment. According to Ng, he’s looking forward to seeing how games are developed differently. He said:

“The idea behind adding new technology and features is something that pretty much any game can benefit from, especially when it is something that can reward the users’ time and expenditure on the game itself.”

Notably, Ng has already looked into a few blockchain titles but has yet to try them out. The gamer said he’ll start to get into it once the busy competitive gaming season ends.

Walter Lee, partner growth and GameFi leader at BNB Chain, which enters the competitive gaming market through a partnership with Gaimin Gladiators, said Web3 and blockchain tech could empower traditional gaming ecosystems and offers opportunities for pro gamers. The executive also believes players can build their brand and revenue streams in Web3, allowing them “to sustain and build” in the space “with lesser reliance” on esports firms.
