Twitter is Reportedly Working on Crypto Tipping and Native Coin

Extracted code indicates that Twitter may be developing a crypto payment system integrated with its native coin.

Twitter’s web app code shows a potential new “Twitter Coin” tipping integration

Earlier this week, rumors of a “Twitter Coin” circulated on social media after several reports revealed that Twitter may be working on a crypto payment system integrated with its native coin.

Nima Owji, who runs an app-centric data breach account on Twitter, posted three screenshots on December 4th. This shows what looks like her Twitter interface with a “coin” option for tipping and a vector image showing a coin with the Twitter logo.

The exposed information was similar to that shared by security researcher Jane Manchun Wong. Wong claimed to have discovered these from code extracted from a recent version of her Twitter Web App.

Wong told The Block through his LinkedIn profile that Twitter’s coin icon does not represent a native token under development, but may be related to the cryptocurrency’s tipping feature. “It hasn’t been deployed yet. We have very little information about what exactly this is,” he wrote.

Shortly after sharing the leaked screenshot, Wong’s Twitter and LinkedIn profiles disappeared from both platforms. However, the news has already spread like wildfire, with many users in the Dogecoin community speculating that Twitter Coin may actually be a placeholder name for his Dogecoin. Given that Memecoin is widely associated with Twitter’s new boss Elon Her Mask, the token at one point saw him surge 6% to reach his all-time high of $0.111.

On December 4th, the billionaire spoke on a similar subject via Twitter Spaces, suggesting to an audience of 2.1 million that he was still interested in integrating cryptocurrencies into social media platforms. “It’s a no-brainer for Twitter to make payments in both fiat and cryptocurrencies,” he said.

Since social media giant Twitter was acquired for $44 billion, Musk has made a number of changes to its platform around censorship policies, bot activity, information disclosure, and paid verification.
