Yosuke Matsuda described blockchain entertainment as the company’s “most important focus” and believes we will see “games made unlike anyone else’s.”
After becoming the 21st verifier for blockchain gaming company Oasys last month, Square Enix has now released their 2022 annual report in which CEO Yosuke Matsuda shared a message to the Japanese conglomerate’s shareholders in which he reiterated the company’s interest in blockchain gaming.
In his report for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022, Matsuda described blockchain as one of the key areas of investment under his “medium-term profitability goals and business strategy.” The other two areas are artificial intelligence and cloud computing, but the CEO singled out blockchain as the company’s “most important focus” and compared it to the other two, saying that while artificial intelligence and cloud computing “primarily involve incorporating new technological advances into the gaming experience in game development,” blockchain, on the other hand, is not only unique technically but even more so philosophically,” as represented by the concept of decentralization that underpins the blockchain model.”
He added that traditional games can be called “centralized games” because they are finished products whose experience is controlled by their developers, not the players, while blockchain games allow players to “exercise their own agency in the world in which they create and run their games,” thus calling them “decentralized games.”
“In the future, we may see the concept of decentralized games take off, as well as the proliferation of token economies, which are mechanisms that incentivize players to participate in decentralized games in a variety of ways. If this leads to the creation of self-sustaining worlds with greater scalability, I believe we will see the creation of new types of games unlike anyone else’s.”
He concluded the section related to the blockchain entertainment space by saying that blockchain technology “presents us with the challenge of seeing what kind of new excitement we can create with it. We will remain aggressive in this new area.” You can check out his entire message as well as the full annual report here.
This isn’t the first time Matsuda has talked about blockchain gaming. The Square Enix president first talked about NFT and blockchain games in his New Year’s letter, and then he further expressed his belief in the future of gaming in an interview with Yahoo Japan. The blockchain entertainment business unit was established back in February of this year, which was disclosed in a financial report released in May of the same year.
