According to Wall Street Journal, currently, Horizon Worlds has less than 200,000 monthly active users (MAU). Its original goal was to achieve 500,000 MAU by the end of 2022.
“An empty world is a sad world,” noted Meta regarding Horizon Worlds’ downfall
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is reportedly struggling to retain users on its social virtual reality (VR) platform, Horizon Worlds. According to internal documents seen by Wall Street Journal, the firm is now “grappling with glitchy technology, uninterested users, and lack of clarity of what it will take to succeed”.
Currently, Horizon Worlds has less than 200k monthly active users, down from the 300,000-user milestone Meta confirmed in February. The documents also revealed that the company had to revise its original goal of reaching 500k MAU on Horizon to only 280k by the end of 2022.
While Meta said it had around 10,000 separate worlds as of February, the report claimed that only about 9% of these virtual destinations are visited by more than 50 users. Most users don’t even return after one month of using the platform.
Earlier this month, Meta’s VP of Metaverse, Vishal Shah, admitted that Horizon Worlds is plagued with several quality issues and staff members are not even using the platform as frequently themselves.
“Feedback from our creators, users, playtesters, and many of us on the team is that the aggregate weight of papercuts, stability issues, and bugs is making it too hard for our community to experience the magic of Horizon,” wrote Shah in an internal memo seen by The Verge.
In a survey of 514 Horizon users, Meta researchers discovered that many users couldn’t find virtual worlds they liked and couldn’t find other people to interact with on the platform. Other complaints included that people “do not look real” as the avatars don’t have any legs.
Admittedly, interest in the metaverse has been dwindling ever since the crypto winter began this year. Even so, Horizon seems to be faring equivalent to, if not better, than its Web3 counterparts – The Sandbox and Decentraland. Per the latest stats, The Sandbox recorded 201k monthly users, with Decentraland having slightly more than 56k MAU in September.
