The government has awarded NFT awards to mayors of seven cities for their use of technology to solve local problems.
Seven Mayors Given NFT Awards
Japan made history as one of the first governments to give out NFTs as a supplemental award to local officials. The officials are said to have excelled in using digital technology to solve challenges in their territories. The awards were presented at the Digi Denkoshien ceremony in summer 2022 by the Cabinet Secretariat, a government agency led by Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno.
The award ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. In addition, the award was presented to seven mayors, including the mayor of Sakata City in Yamagata Prefecture, whose government uses electric vehicles for local deliveries. Another award winner was Maebashi City in Gunma Prefecture, whose government introduced a platform that uses smartphone cameras to track changes in real-time traffic conditions.
Ether-based NFTs use proof of attendance (POAP) and are not transferable and cannot be sold on the secondary market; NFT rewards are issued through Hazama Base; the same platform used by the Liberal Democratic Party’s Youth Bureau to issue NFTs at an event.
Japan And Crypto Innovation
The country continues to promote innovation and technology, and cryptocurrencies are a traded asset as part of government-regulated financial services. Initially, the Prime Minister mentioned a number of uses for NFTs and this reward program is part of the strategy.
At the height of the bull market last year, NFTs were popular. However, with the collapse of cryptocurrencies, their value plummeted. Nevertheless, this initiative by the Japanese government will strengthen the resolve of businesses and citizens to embrace new technologies.
In other news, Tamadoge, a platform based on NFT and metaverse has widely adopted its tokens. However, less than 30% of the platform’s tokens are still available, with tokens pre-sold for $13.7 million.
