MSc in Metaverse Technology
Hong Kong Polytechnic University has incorporated metaverse into its postgraduate program. According to the school’s website, the institution will offer a ‘Master of Science in Metaverse Technology’ from September 2023.
The new course will educate students about the metaverse and the principal technology for building 3D virtual spaces. It will run for 12 months and will be under the Department of Computing, Faculty of Engineering. Students will also be taught how to ‘pursue careers in start-ups and big players in the metaverse industry.’
The metaverse is a virtual space where people can interact through games, movie theatres, and other immersive experiences. The industry has seen an astronomical rise in value and utility, and several giant corporations like Facebook and Microsoft have ventured into the space. It is estimated that the new technology could be worth $5 trillion by 2030 due to the increased demand for metaverse-based platforms and products.
Universities with Metaverse Programs
Hong Kong Polytechnic University is not the first institution to have a metaverse-based course. Several Universities in the city and worldwide are already tapping into emerging technologies.
Last month, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced it would host a Web3 carnival where online discussions on the sector will take place in November. Web3 is relatively new, but enthusiasts have described the technology as the next thing to take over the internet. Its popularity is driven by the wide adoption of NFTs and decentralized apps.
Early this year, Ankara University in Turkey became the first institution to offer a course on NFTs. The University of Tokyo started study programs in the metaverse in July. In September, the University of Houston made a metaverse campaign to strengthen the industrial metaverse.
