Getting the attention of mainstream gamers has been an uphill battle for blockchain games. Especially with the recent backlash against NFT from the larger gaming community. But Gala Games and Epic Games are pairing up to try and change that. Apparently, the entire Gala catalog will eventually be available in the Epic store. But at the top of the list is the upcoming Wild West-themed battle royale game, Grit.
In October 2021, Steam banned NFT games from its platform, and Gabe Newell made some very negative and obviously ill-advised comments about the NFT and blockchain space. But in reality, we know the main reason was that Steam was making a ton of money from item sales on its platform and didn’t want to share that revenue. Epic Games, on the other hand, recognizes the growing blockchain gaming industry and has decided to support it rather than reject it. This is a big coup for Gala Games. Especially if they can bring a few games to market quickly to capitalize on the hype. And it could be a major windfall for Epic Games, whose store has long been overshadowed by the behemoth that is Steam.
Grit is First to the Epic Games Store
Grit, a Wild West-themed battle royale game, is the first game scheduled to launch on the Epic Games Store. This will be the first web3 game to be sold in the Epic Games Store.
Supporting single-player, two-player and team matches, Grit promises epic gunfights with guns, horses and explosives! Sounds like a good start. But we still need to choose from different game modes, a variety of elaborate maps, support for player-made maps, and other cool stuff like that.
As the first web3 game to appear on the Epic store, Grit has a great opportunity here. It also has a great responsibility. As the first game to appear in front of the mainstream, Grit needs to show that blockchain gaming is legitimate and not just a way to push more microtransactions to players. They also need to make sure the barrier to entry is low. ie, provide a reasonably priced entry point for new players and don’t make them deal with setting up wallets and exchanging currency just to start playing. Finally, they need to make a game that is fun to play.
They have a good start with a proven game type and an interesting theme. Hopefully Grit will deliver.
Gunslinger Sale
Gunslinger is a unique, generative character NFT. there are 10,000 in this sale, and the sale is open to different groups in stages. As I write this, Gunslinger boxes are available to Galaverse attendees and Founders Node licensees for $1,200. on June 8, Gala Gold members have been added to the whitelist, raising the price to $1,500. For the public sale, which goes live on June 9, the price will be half the base price of the box on the secondary market, or $1,500, whichever is more.
Gunner is a playable incarnation of the character in the Grit game. Each character has its own set of attributes and benefits. The characters have loading features that allow players to customize their characters. The Gunners are currently boxed. It is unclear when they will be revealed
And, while these Gunners have Founders NFT type prices, there is no mention that owning these character skins will provide any special benefits or bonuses beyond what the average player might have.
