Decentraland Launches Smart Wearables Portable Experiences

Smart Wearables are purchasable items that can be worn by your Decentraland avatar to unlock new abilities and experiences. Portable Experiences, on the other hand, can be enabled for free to view hidden content in certain scenes without having to connect to your wallet.

Decentraland has officially announced the official release of two new key features: smart wearables and portable experiences.

Smart wearables are digital clothing and accessories that players can equip on their avatars to unlock abilities and experiences made with specific wearables in mind. This empowers digital fashion designers to add practicality to their work in a variety of creative ways, making clothes more than just looks. Examples of what this feature can do are having glasses with exclusive access to VIP rooms, or equipping yourself with a jetpack that you can actually fly. It opens up opportunities for collaboration for brands and new ways for game developers to add variety to gameplay as players compete with wearables to unlock new weapons and more. An early version of this feature was previously available at events such as He Metaverse Fashion Week.

To mark the official launch, Decentraland and Audius will release the Metaverse’s “first portable music player” in the coming weeks. This means that avatars wearing Audius smart wearable headphones unlock the ability to listen to music available on the Audius platform while exploring virtual worlds. In the Decentraland Marketplace, you’ll find smart wearables with a lightning bolt icon in their thumbnails.

Portable experiences, like smart wearables, are “like augmented reality in the virtual world” because they unlock hidden parts of the world. With the portable experience enabled, the player can, for example, see certain items scattered throughout the area to collect, of which the avatar can dance a custom his dance whenever he collects one. Players who don’t have this enabled won’t be able to see the items you do, but they will be able to see your dance animations.

In an official blog post, Decentraland said the difference between the two new significant additions is that the smart wearable will have to be purchased, whereas the portable experience will be free in certain scenes, even if the wallet isn’t connected. It describes it as being “ideal” because it can be activated with For events and social gatherings.”
